1. a piece of music sung or played in the open air, typically by a man at night under the window of his lover.
An odd way to begin an article, interview or otherwise, yes. Reason, extrinsic valuation… I think it’s important to set the stage of ones heart before we begin. Now myself, I am a sucker for a good serenade. Having been spoiled throughout my life by the lovely sounds of men, who would break into song upon my sight. Now, I say these things not out of ego but sheer joy!
Fondest of these memories begin with “Maria”, Westside Story, being sung to me from the 6th – 8th grades, as I walked the hallways between classes. My harmonizing super champion brothers for life, God blessed me with as friends. Singing songs such as “My Girl”, to myself and my beautiful girlfriends. We grew up as a family, bound by an unseen force, United.
Fast forward to my pregnancy with my twins, Bill Baker, singing Frankie Avalon’s, “Venus, If You Will” as I walk into The Purple Room in Palm Springs with my ex, where Frank Sinatra proposed to Barbra Sinatra on the same dance floor where we fell in love. That guy knew how to do romance… When it suited him.
The serenade is a high frequency of magic, designed to delight and win the heart of the receiver.
Having been invited to interview Tyrese Gibson a second time, this time with my own questions! I was elated! Nervous, I’m one of those types that gets sick to her stomach and cries with nerves… Very sexy stuff! Not! But I wasn’t going to let my nerves get the best of me. I’d received a phone number to call from Tyreses’ Communication Goddess, LaTasha and a designated time. As she answers the conference call, there where about 9 of the hand picked of 15 #TeamVoltron Social Media favorite bloggers of the Black Rose Camp, already on the line. No one was chatting, we were q’d to talk amongst ourselves. LaTasha was instructed to encourage chatter between us. We each introduced our selves. And amused it would be delightful to have Tyrese serenade us. If I dare say, I may have encouraged the excitement a bit with the crowd.
And in true Tyrese form, when he joined the conversation, he did indeed delight us in Sam Smith’s, “Stay”. Of which, I, myself have heard Sam sing live at Portland Edgefield’s, Lawn Concert series last fall. Dare I say, being the biggest fan of true live music! Wow! Incredible! And no disrespect to Sam, he too is incredible or I wouldn’t have bought the ticket! But wowza I won’t lie, Tyrese sounds absolutely awesome live, great voice, very clean sound. I could have listened for hours without a thought passing!
Because of my love for music, this site itself was once a pure video site with thousands of hours of videos. The first three belonging to 3 of my most favorite Music Goddesses ; Rihanna, “Umbrella”, Lily Allen, “Alfie” and the truly ever epic, truly misunderstood beauty of the Late Great Amy Winehouse. And her brilliant tune, “Rehab” Thank you to my Tech Director for programming the first three.
I, myself, coded too many to count after in the years that followed. Wow! Those were some wild times when it all began 9 years ago here at IMO.
3 years into the video library Mecca that IMO became, it took a huge blow. IMO had been hacked! By my Tech Directors Now ex girlfriend and she was out for blood, but it was mine she shed… She’d locked both of us out of the site. The only way to recover… Dump the site and begin anew. And I did! With the new, also did my own voice emerged from IMO. My voice… I’d taken back my site, though it wasn’t the same, it’d lost the thousands of programming hours and it was blank. My ex fiancé having passed away, I was left to live and rebuild my whole world from the ground up.
Music was my champion. Music made me my own champion. Music was healing me, leading me and preparing me for what I was always meant to do.
With no content on my site, a brand new Corporation under my belt, a new outlook on life. I began to go to the best Live shows. Mickey Avalon, I’d been before and was very comfortable with the environment and people. Mickey had Dirt Nasty and Andre Legacy performing with him at Dantes, so my girlfriend Shannon and I had to go! Having had messaged Frank in advanced, I’d requested the Managers table. My favorite place to view shows. And when my gal and I arrived, Reserved sign on a table. Meow! Not mine, but the little one next to it. The folks next to us soon left my requested table. And the party ensued! I was once again a #happynerdgirl Jane Fonda – Mickey Avalon
I then hit up Dukes Country Bar on Halloween, caught Zac Brown Band. Spoke to them for a few moments, and moseyed away… As She’s Walking Away – Zac Brown Band
Adventuring to the Hawthorne Theater to catch Shwayze and Cisco, partied afterwards at Dantes with them. Got up enough liquid nerve to ask Cisco if he’d help me turn my poetry into songs. I wanted him to teach me to write great songs. His response… He pointed to the stage and said okay, go sing something. If you met me now, no problem. Back then I was completely not confident enough to dare such a feat. But it was he, that day that lead me to this point today that I will sing in public completely care free! Thank you my brother. I hope you know you mean the world to me my dear friend. Though I’m more often an odd ball completely awkward and socially distorted at time
Corona and Lime – Shwayze & Cisco
Decided I needed to be in LA to really make my music reviewing experience raw. Hit the home of music, the Sunset Strip and all the great clubs and underground culture that included. Had the cool pleasure of meeting the epitaph of Fem Gonzo Pop Culture Writer, wonderfully wily Ultimate Band Girl. Thanks girl! Who led me through the mystical maze, that I’d again find my way alone through Hollywoods labyrinth of Sex, drugs and Rock and Roll!
Butterflies – Shwayze & Cisco Had a Twitter Adam invite, Got the message… Too late…
Got a sneak peak of this one hot off the edit in our office in LA Grace Under Fire – Smokey Robotic feat. Rosco Umali & Stylztic Jones Thank you Z, Father Dude and Illmind ✌️❤️🎶💯
By 2010, I’d met a few major players in the entertainment world, decided to put my tools to work and create a unique method of PR. Creating my very own lists of who was who, for myself, an experiment year by year as to who’s career I could boost or revive. With their own efforts included, of course… And an effort to see if I could change the way mainstream society viewed beauty. Eventually change what beauty is viewed to be, is my goal. I have enjoyed the beautiful stretch marks the lists have made on the minds of our society.
After 5 solid years of these incredibly society changing lists and Music, Art and Entertainment PR, I decided it was time for next level expression. Given a miraculous opportunity my last trip to LA in Feb. – April 2015 to write an article from a conference interview Tyrese Gibson had done.
The Face of IMO changed once again… Interviews, Articles, Blog posts… A new age of IMO has emerged again. Thank you Tyrese Gibson!
Black Rose Album
Shame – Tyrese feat. Jennifer Hudson On to the meat of this not so fluffy music interview. Time to get real and show all my cards…
When I did the first article back in March, I never in a million years would have guessed I’d wake up in one of the biggest PR scandals I’ve ever had the privilege to enjoy being strapped to a time bomb and thrown to the wolves in the middle of. Remember in the beginning of this piece, I revealed I’m a nervous nelly in my belly and get all twisted, tied up and upset to tears… One can only imagine then my reaction when I woke one morning to Tyrese accusing Ryan Seacrest, Elvis Duran and KiisFM LA and Z100 NY of being racist…
Now to most bloggers or business owners this wouldn’t mean much. Except to me! It meant my whole world, I’d spent years building was thrown into a fire pit and set to blaze by a man who dared make me the voice of his fight to have his music played on mainstream radio. Or as he puts it, Black R & B on Mainstream radio stations. Admittedly, I was a bit astonished myself it wasn’t played at first. And not being too nervous for a quality battle. I prayed, I wrote and rewrote until I found the road least traveled.
International Media Organization is my brain child incorporated April 10, 2007. In September 2010, I began my, “Revive Radio” Campaign in order to save DJ’d radio from extinction. Potentially leaving us only the ability to utilize the new selective listening forms such as iheartradio, Pandora, Sirius and downloads straight to our personal handheld listening devices. I believe it’s important that live / recorded radio always be available to all people most especially people with little access to music except through free radio. As a kid, it was everything to me…
Nielsen Ratings numbers for Radio listening is showing its highest listening audience ever, presently 71.7 million on air listeners. Listening audience gains of 29% between 2011- and Aug. 2015 With Ryan Seacrest’s On Air With Ryan being one of the highest listed audiences. I implemented my campaign by waking up Monday- Friday 5:30 am and creating unique interpersonal social media content side by side Ryan Seacrest’s on air with Ryan show co- hosted by Ellen K at 102.7 KIISFM
Over the years this afforded me great opportunities to my social media clients, musicians and artists I’ve done PR for, to be seen and noticed by people otherwise difficult for them to gain attention from.
One can only imagine the way my head spun upon his accusations… Especially since they are unfounded. However he was right to desire his music be played… So the question, how to address it? I’m not afraid of the issue, it simply takes more thought then a moment provides.
As my darlings can tell you as far as PR, my specialty is worst cases of chaos clean up scenarios. Not my first day in in the tigers cage caught holding the baseball bat while Macy Gray sings, “Sex-O-Madic Venus Freak”, in serenade. Sex-O-Matic Venus Freak- Macy Gray – Super Natural Cut
It’s taken a lot to wrap my mind around all of it. Because as its unfolded day by day, more and more Black Community Leaders have made their presence known in my world. A light lean, just to remind me of my responsibility as International Media Organization. Which makes me responsible to do my part. And though there are many tails I could tell, it’s best to do my do diligence to pray and share like hell.
I get it, I do. Like I asked Tyrese, my lips to his ear. Do you believe recording studio’s and manager contracts influence who gets (played) was meant to be said though I actually said, “paid”? I had a Freudian slip as it was a two part question, I’d ended up combining them. Being coy, without really intending to. But once it was out we both gave a laugh and rolled with it. His response was he refused to pay to play or make a radio edit. Completely respectable to the art, the passion of the work. I had 6 pages of questions written. I had one shot, one question, nailed it. He was sharp, quick and cleaver to respond.
Sadly the cost of airtime is pop culture bubble gum flavored popcorn covered in rainbow glitter cherry scented candy coating.
I love “Shame”, I don’t have the power to change the radio programmers minds. I don’t have that much influence. I never knew I was thought to have it like that. I am completely flattered. I posted my life standing views, in past articles I’ve written based on similar racial battles on my FaceBook. Feel free to read there or perhaps I’ll post them here.
One truth is certain, Tyrese makes incredibly amazing music, worth buying the full album. I encourage all to support his music and I applaud his efforts towards an important cause.
We live in a fragile racial climate and smearing the lines between races until we smudge them away should be our only mindset, no matter the political or cultural arena. We are a one world people. I consider the artists, poets, song writers, singers and song players to be the Captains and Generals of the Warriors of Rainbow. Lives with purpose to unite the world in music and ignite the world to dance in joy!
Serenade your life, your loved ones, serenade your own soul into sweet submission to your dreams. God bless all of you and Thank you each and everyone. Tyrese, you are a great man amidst great men.
Thank you for reading and celebrating Digital Media with IMO for this sites 9th Birthday #IMOCDM9
